Modern Data Platform Sustains Municipal Water Management


This municipal water & wastewater utility provides over 50 billion gallons of drinking water a year to over 1 million customers. They manage thousands of miles of water and wastewater lines spanning 500-plus square miles, three water treatment plants, two wastewater treatment plants and 30-plus thousand acres of wildlandsThis customer needs to be well equipped with a technology strategy that supports their commitment to providing people with clean, reliable and safe drinking water. Tallan conducted a DPi30 engagement with the client’s team to create a data pilot in their pre-existing Azure environment.

A Coordinated, Team Effort.
  • Through several working sessions and virtual meetingsTallan highlighted how an Azure Data Platform could provide long lasting benefits for the utility’s specific needs. Tallan educated the client’s team on how to use the various Azure tools to ensure successful adoption
  • Because of contracting requirements, this state agency required an ‘over the shoulder’ approach where a Tallan architect worked live with the dedicated client contact as they did the hands-on work. This allowed the customer to gain direct experience while having a resource at their fingertips. 
Clean Water Reporting.
  • Following an assessment, Tallan built the foundation of a Modern Data Platform to allow centralized, and reusable access to the required datasets. The platform consisted of several processes for bringing data from two SQL Server Databases and one SFTP source, into the new platform to enable new reporting and analytics capabilities. 
  • The project pulled data into an Azure Data Lake, a Synapse Data Warehouse, and finally a Power BI report. The data was combined into a Dimensional Model, and ultimately meter readings could be broken down by data and time of day, to more easily identify outliers. 
Looking Ahead.
  • Creating a landing zone underpinned with Azure, Tallan used Power BI and the freshly transformed data to separate out readings by date and time to create a more well-rounded understanding of the data available. This also provided insight into any missing data. 
  • As a strategic partner, Tallan found additional ways to enhance the utility’s long-term strategy. These opportunities include a more robust AMI intake process, leveraging advanced analytics at enterprise scale with Azure Databricks, exploring techniques for preserving historical dimensional data and a certified semantic model for enterprise reportingThese opportunities, as well as those established in our engagement, have helped provide valuable insights into the management of reliable water services for millions of people.
