The Tallan team has had a longstanding dedication to bettering the communities where we work and live. Through mentorship, fundraising events, scholarships, and sponsorship, we’ve helped make a difference. Recently, Tallan has actively advocated for more women in STEM-related careers in addition to programs that promote improved technology education and access to resources for students across Connecticut. Here are some recent programs we’re proud to be a part of.
The Lt. Governor’s Computing Challenge
Tallan has been a sponsor of Connecticut’s Lt. Governor’s Computing Challenge for the past two years. This computing challenge is a Connecticut based effort that encourages students in grades 3 through 12 to build a concept, prototype or complete a computer program based on a topic that advances coding abilities.
The Coding for Good – Inspiring Health and Wellness for All program, launched in 2022, asked students to identify a problem and propose a computing solution using one of three challenge options. Tallan collaborated with Connecticut educational organizations to raise awareness and participation in this year’s challenge. Our team also produced three resource videos for students to refer to: Building a Flowchart, Storyboarding Your Ideas, and Building Wireframes, which can be found here. Tallan CFO Michelle Petri-Hall was part of the guest panel that judged student submissions alongside Tallan Senior UX Consultant Christina Tillbrook.
Million Women Mentors
Million Women Mentors is an organization that actively helps women in STEM fields. Their goals include increasing the number of girls and women who explore, persist in, and succeed in STEM fields, enhancing mentorship to encourage girls and women on STEM paths, and establishing a premier network of organizations and individuals who support girls and women in STEM.
Tallan appeared on a panel with Lt. Governor Susan Bysciewicz to kick off CS Educational Week in 2021 and explore professions in technology. To learn more about this fantastic initiative, visit their website.
Tallan Women in STEM Scholarship
Tallan’s Scholarship has been given to a local female high school student who has been enrolled and pursuing a college degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) subject since its start in 2018. Past recipients have received an Enterprise-grade developer laptop, similar to those our consultants use daily. Tallan is proud of this initiative, especially as a local employer of women with STEM degrees. The Women in STEM movement continues to gain traction and importance, and we are honored to be a part of it.
The Tallan Scholarship was extended to students from across Connecticut during the program’s fourth year. Christina Tillbrook of Tallan held a Women in STEM virtual presentation in 2022, where she highlighted women in the workplace, barriers to encouraging change, her own inspirational story, and our scholarship program for 2022.
Tallan’s Women in Stem Scholarship is currently open to new applicants until June 3rd! Click here to learn more or apply.
