Today, we are going to explore Azure Data Factory! Azure Data Factory, or ADF for short, is a cloud data analytics platform offered by Microsoft through Azure. Azure Data Factory mainly pertains to ETL or ELT work dealing with data analytics and big data workflows. It is a powerful platform that can be utilized to increase business insight, and this post will explore the general use of the Azure Data Factory as well as the business value of the platform.
What is Azure Data Factory?
At its core, Azure Data Factory is a cloud-based platform designed by Microsoft to allow users to integrate a vast amount of (supported) data sources.
To further explain what the platform provides, let’s compare Azure Data Factory to another factory type, say a clothing factory. A clothing factory imports several different raw materials into the factory; once the raw materials are acquired, the factory begins manipulating and transforming the raw materials into a finished good to be consumed, such as a T-shirt that says, I love Azure Data Factory.

Azure Data Factory does this exact process, but our ‘raw materials’ are our supported data sources, and our ‘finished goods’ are groomed and enriched data to be utilized in our business.
Since Azure Data Factory is highly customizable and tailored to each business, it can be hard to narrow down specific use cases which apply to all businesses, however, we have found the following points to hold true for most businesses.
- Builds Trust
- Provides visibility into the flow of your data.
- Ability to automate data collection on a fixed time interval
- Single Pane of Glass
- Intuitive browser UI allows one place to manage and monitor your data.
- No VPN or Virtual Machine needed
- User Friendly
- Low code, highly visual workflow based around drag and drop JSON objects.
- Ability to scale the environment up or down, depending on what your work demands.
